The California Climate Action Registry (California Registry) has begun development of a GHG reduction project protocol for co-digestion activities. The Co-Digestion Project Reporting Protocol will provide an accurate GHG accounting methodology for GHG reduction projects that anaerobically digest manure and/or organic waste streams that otherwise would have gone to anaerobic storage, treatment and disposal systems such as solid waste landfills, anaerobic lagoons, and wastewater treatment facilities.

The California Registry is working closely with the a multi-stakeholder workgroup throughout the protocol development process. The workgroup includes industry representatives, state and federal agency personnel, NGOs, and expert consultants. This group of stakeholders will review and comment on the initial draft protocol, and will help ensure that the California Registry produces a high quality GHG reduction protocol for co-digestion activities. A draft of the protocol will be released for public comment during Spring 2009.
