FORESTS VITAL ROLE IN CURBING CLIMATE CHANGE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED!

Officially recognizing the vital role that forests have in addressing climate change, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted the California Climate Action Registry Forest Project Protocols. This is the first time a government agency in the United States has adopted protocols for voluntary carbon reduction projects. The California Climate Action Registry Forest Protocols are designed to address forests’ unique capacity to both store and emit CO2 and to facilitate the critical role that forests need to play in solving climate change.
Organizations interested in registering forest projects with California Climate Action Registry should plan to attend the January 24 workshop described below.

LANDFILL PROJECT REPORTING PROTOCOL ADOPTED
On November 29, 2007 the California Climate Action Registry Board of Directors adopted the Landfill Project Reporting Protocol for quantifying the greenhouse gas reduction benefits of implementing landfill methane capture and combustion projects. The use of this protocol will result in the creation of high quality greenhouse gas reduction projects that represent activities that are above and beyond business as usual in the landfill sector. The Landfill Project Reporting Protocol is now available for public use and is applicable both in California and nationwide.
The California Registry Board of Directors will be meeting again on February 14, 2008 to discuss activities and developments for all Project Reporting Protocols, including those in the development stages.
For additional information on the California Registry’s protocols, please contact Derek Markolf or Rachel Tornek.
